21st Century Learning
In order for today’s students to be prepared for the future and all of its possibilities, it is imperative that education be proactive in addressing the needs of the individual, as well as the needs of the community and society at large. I believe that, 21st-century education should be focused on critical thinking, global awareness, effective communication, positive citizenship, community building, collaboration, and problem solving in order to inspire generations of students to be responsible citizens who are capable, innovative and passionate about life-long learning.
To promote this view of education, lessons need to be interactive, engaging, collaborative and thought provoking while still teaching the mastery of both literacy and numeracy skills. In addition, students should be given choice in how they acquire and represent of their knowledge according to their needs and desires. Also, technology should enhance the learning experience of the individual and be used in ways that are engaging, effective, and responsible. Furthermore, students should be taught how their learning directly affects their future and impact on the world, so, for example, knowledge of numeracy should evolve into financial and economic awareness.
Overall, teaching students according to a 21st-century view of education should produce generations of people who are informed, self-directed learners, good communicators, and globally minded individuals with the capacity and desire to change the world in innovate and amazing ways.
